Military Veterans in Gaming: Their Impact and Contributions

Let's take a moment to honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions of military veterans, not only to our country but also to the industries they touch—including the video game industry. Veterans bring a unique set of skills, resilience, and leadership qualities, making an extraordinary impact in gaming, whether through employment, therapeutic connections, or community engagement. Here's a look at how veterans are shaping the gaming industry, along with some key resources to support their journey.

Employment and Contributions:

Veterans have found rewarding roles in the gaming sector, using skills such as leadership, strategic planning, and technical expertise honed during their service. Major companies like Activision Blizzard actively recruit veterans, recognizing the unique perspectives and discipline they bring. The Call of Duty Endowment (C.O.D.E.), also established by Activision Blizzard, has been a powerful force in supporting veterans' careers, placing more than 110,000 veterans into meaningful employment as of 2023. These initiatives not only create job opportunities but also ensure veterans can thrive in civilian roles that value their experience.

Community and Well-being:

Gaming has proven to be a powerful tool for veterans dealing with mental health challenges, including PTSD. Video games provide veterans with a therapeutic outlet, offering both a space for escapism and a way to connect with others. Esports, for instance, has become a popular avenue for veterans seeking camaraderie and purpose in competitive gaming. Organizations like Regiment Gaming work to unite veterans and active service members, using gaming to combat serious issues like veteran suicide by fostering a supportive community.

Supportive Organizations:

One of the standout organizations supporting veterans in gaming is Stack Up. This nonprofit promotes positive mental health through gaming, sending video game care packages to deployed units, organizing trips to gaming events, and offering peer-to-peer mental health support. Through efforts like these, Stack Up fosters a positive and supportive space for veterans within the gaming community.

The Toy Soldier:

On a personal level, Army veteran Peter Rice was instrumental in launching my lifelong journey in games. A veteran of the Vietnam War turned avid board gamer, Peter created a sense of camaraderie for a diverse community of gamers at his personal HQ, a store called the Toy Soldier, where he welcomed all and tirelessly shared hard earned life lessons. Sadly Peter is no longer with us, but his legacy and that of many other veterans continues to inspire to this day.

Resources for Veterans Transitioning into the Gaming Industry:

For veterans looking to build a career in gaming, several resources provide valuable training, networking, and mentorship opportunities:

Microsoft Software and Systems Academy (MSSA): This 17-week training program equips veterans with skills for careers in technology, including gaming, with training in fields such as cloud development and cybersecurity.
Veterans in Media & Entertainment (VME): A professional association of military veterans aspiring to work in media and entertainment, VME offers networking, internships, and job placement opportunities, making it an excellent resource for veterans transitioning into gaming.
Stack Up: In addition to mental health support, Stack Up provides valuable industry connections through community projects and gaming event participation.
Activision Blizzard's Military Veterans Program: With dedicated career tracks in content development and business operations, this program provides veterans opportunities to bring their skills into the gaming industry.
Warrior GMR Foundation: This organization reduces veteran suicide and fosters resilience through transformative gaming experiences, offering support and mentorship for veterans in civilian life.
Call of Duty Endowment (C.O.D.E.): While not exclusively focused on gaming, C.O.D.E. funds organizations that help veterans secure high-quality jobs, providing critical support for those entering new fields.
Online Gaming Communities: Supportive gaming communities, such as OGL.tv, offer veterans a way to connect with like-minded individuals, combat PTSD, and explore career opportunities in gaming.

These resources offer veterans various pathways to enter and excel in the gaming industry, leveraging their unique skills and experiences.

Please join me—not just today, but every day—in recognizing the exceptional contributions of military veterans to the gaming industry, celebrating their talents and dedication in building a stronger, more supportive community.
